The Week of Free Expression will take place for the fifth time from May 3-10, 2025. Under the motto “Arguing? Absolutely!”, this time it will focus on the culture of debate and the ability to debate in our society with a diverse program from numerous partners. Arguing and listening to each other are essential skills for diversity of opinion and decision-making and are indispensable as cornerstones of a vibrant democracy.

As part of the Week of Free Expression, the team of Die Kasseler Liste will host a special seminar:

Eine Liste aller verbotenen Bücher – wie und wozu?

About the Week of Free Expression

The preservation of democratic values is a pressing social concern for more and more people. Against this backdrop, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, together with the Frankfurter Agenturallianz, initiated Freedom of Expression Week for the first time in 2021 and spent an entire week focusing public attention on the importance of diversity of opinion and lively debate for a free, democratic society.

Thanks to the involvement of numerous partners from the book and media industry, civil society and business, the campaign week has developed into a nationwide, fixed communication event every year in May. Between May 3, International Press Freedom Day, and May 10, the commemoration of the book burnings in Germany, the freedom of the word is celebrated nationwide with events, exhibitions and campaigns.

Since 2024, the Freedom of Expression Foundation, established by the Börsenverein, has been organizing the campaign week with the support of various cooperation partners and sponsors such as the Federal Foundation Places of German Democratic History, the ZEIT Bucerius Foundation, the Polytechnische Gesellschaft Foundation and the C.H. Beck Cultural Foundation.
